It’s been an amazing 8 years at Master Pattillos karate school, I’ve been taking karate with him since I was 8 and I’ve loved coming to class every day since. Every class is filled with not only karate practice but fun and real life styled situations to stay safe in and outside of karate. Master Pattillo always makes class enjoyable and a blast to be a part of. I’ve learned a lot of valuable skills from taking karate I’ve learned self motivation, self control, I’ve worked on many different forms, kicks, punches, and self defense. This is an amazing karate school and I would recommend it to anyone starting out with karate or anyone who wants to have fun, get exercise and learn self defense. I don’t plan to switch schools ever and hopefully I’ll earn many more belts with Master Pattillo.

My grand-daughter has been attending Master Pattillo's classes for 7 weeks now. I love observing as it is a real pleasure to watch someone so skilled in working with children. My grand-daughter wants to give her own review so I will let her continue from here. "I love karate so much and I love to make new friends at karate. Master Pattillo is so nice and really never gets mad at me. I just love attending at this karate place with my new friends. So I am really enjoying karate a lot. Thank you for teaching me all these things in karate. I think a made a really good decision going to Master Pattillo's Karate."

What a great experience this has been. My granddaughter Josslyn has learned so much in this class. I love the way the children listen and follow directions from Master Pattello and his staff. We would highly recommend you signing your child or grandchild up for his Martial Arts classes.

What a great place for kids to learn some amazing skills, make new friends, and become more disciplined. Master Patillo and Ms.Jackson have amazing patience with all of the children and make sure the kids are learning and having fun at the same time. I am super amazed how they can remember each child's name without hesitation or error and remember each child's strengths and weaknesses. My kids have been excited about the new techniques they've learned and all of the fun "extras" that Master Patillo includes in his program. Thanks for all that you do!

March is National Nutrition Month

Staying hydrated while exercising is very important. Most of the time, when teaching, I bring water to class. If I’m attending class at my instructor’s school or practicing on my own, I might bring something else to supplement water.

Since March is National Nutrition Month, I’m going to share with you my favorite electrolyte-replenishing drink.

What Are Electrolytes?

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine website,

“Electrolytes are minerals in your blood and other body fluids that carry an electric charge.

“Electrolytes affect the amount of water in your body, the acidity of your blood (pH), your muscle function, and other important processes. You lose electrolytes when you sweat. You must replace them by drinking fluids that contain electrolytes. Water does not contain electrolytes.”

The website also lists several common electrolytes that your body needs — which you can get from a little bit of salt in your diet as well as fruits and vegetables.

“Gator-ain’t”

Gatorade and Powerade are two popular drinks that are meant to replenish electrolytes. I remember, as a kid, getting Gatorade when I was sick. Some of you may have had the same experience. Didn’t the flavor seem different back then? Doesn’t Gatorade seem sweeter now?

Powerade contains High Fructose Corn Syrup and Gatorade has its own sweeteners that are just not good for you. I admit that I am guilty of drinking too much Gatorade through the years. So, I “discovered” an alternative that suits me well and is a healthier alternative.

I don’t know where I picked it up, but instead of “Gatorade”, I like to call this recipe “Gator-ain’t”.

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 a bottle of water (just fill a refillable water bottle from the tap)
  • 1/2 a bottle of natural juice (fill the refillable water bottle with a natural juice that has no artificial sweeteners, colors, or preservatives)
  • a pinch of salt

That’s it!

You can increase the amount of water and decrease the juice level to taste, but I don’t recommend adding too much juice because that can upset your stomach while exercising.

Want to super-charge your electrolyte replenishment? Eat a banana before or after working out. It’s pretty mild on the stomach and is full of important nutrients and electrolytes.

If you really want to make some fancier electrolyte drinks, here are a couple of links with Gatorade alternatives:
