It’s been an amazing 8 years at Master Pattillos karate school, I’ve been taking karate with him since I was 8 and I’ve loved coming to class every day since. Every class is filled with not only karate practice but fun and real life styled situations to stay safe in and outside of karate. Master Pattillo always makes class enjoyable and a blast to be a part of. I’ve learned a lot of valuable skills from taking karate I’ve learned self motivation, self control, I’ve worked on many different forms, kicks, punches, and self defense. This is an amazing karate school and I would recommend it to anyone starting out with karate or anyone who wants to have fun, get exercise and learn self defense. I don’t plan to switch schools ever and hopefully I’ll earn many more belts with Master Pattillo.

My grand-daughter has been attending Master Pattillo's classes for 7 weeks now. I love observing as it is a real pleasure to watch someone so skilled in working with children. My grand-daughter wants to give her own review so I will let her continue from here. "I love karate so much and I love to make new friends at karate. Master Pattillo is so nice and really never gets mad at me. I just love attending at this karate place with my new friends. So I am really enjoying karate a lot. Thank you for teaching me all these things in karate. I think a made a really good decision going to Master Pattillo's Karate."

What a great experience this has been. My granddaughter Josslyn has learned so much in this class. I love the way the children listen and follow directions from Master Pattello and his staff. We would highly recommend you signing your child or grandchild up for his Martial Arts classes.

What a great place for kids to learn some amazing skills, make new friends, and become more disciplined. Master Patillo and Ms.Jackson have amazing patience with all of the children and make sure the kids are learning and having fun at the same time. I am super amazed how they can remember each child's name without hesitation or error and remember each child's strengths and weaknesses. My kids have been excited about the new techniques they've learned and all of the fun "extras" that Master Patillo includes in his program. Thanks for all that you do!

The Truth About Self-Protection and the Martial Arts (Part 1)

The Truth About Self-Protection and the Martial Arts (Part 1)

You may be surprised to hear what I’m about to tell you. Even if you disagree, at first, I want you to keep reading because I’ll explain what I mean by what I’m about to say.

As a martial arts instructor, I want my students to use what they learn in class every day. I can imagine some of you might be thinking, “I don’t want my kid starting fights or hitting others!”

Don’t worry, this isn’t Cobra Kai. I don’t want your kids starting fights, either.

While most parents include self-defense or self-protection as a reason they’re signing their child up for classes, they also will ask me, “Will Karate make my child violent?”

The fact is, for many kids, Karate gives them a positive outlet that teaches them humility, self-control, and respect for others. All the things that help kids become less likely to kick or punch others out of aggression or anger.

To put it another way, instead of using their kicks and punches in their every day lives, kids take the humility, self-control, and respect for others that they learn in class into their every day lives. Can you imagine being the envy of the other moms and dads because your kid has these traits? It’s what virtually every parent wants, right?

In the words of infomercial icon Billy Mays, “But wait! There’s more!”

There’s More to Self-Defense Than Kicking and Punching Attackers

Check out this Facebook message I received the other day:

“So I just gotta tell you about [son’s name]. He was riding his skateboard yesterday and I’ve been trying to teach him some tricks. He fell, but when he did he used the “falling” method you taught him. He was able to protect his head from hitting the pavement, so thank you! He was like good thing I used that technique master pattillo taught me.”

The techniques I taught her son were rear break falls and side break falls. Simple, basic moves that help keep a person from hitting their head in a fall. Her son, in a split second, reacted to the fall by landing in a way that protected his head and wrist (two body parts most often injured in a fall that can lead to a visit to the ER).

I was so happy and proud that he had applied what he learned in class.

Another student, one of my adult Karate students, shared with me just a month or two ago, that he used a technique he learned in Karate class when he got into his car accident: the forearm shield. It protected his face and neck from some of the impact debris. The debris ended up cutting his arm but not his face or neck.

For both kids and adults, the top reason for signing up for our martial arts classes is self-protection. What many of them do not realize is that “self-protection” is so much more than kicking and punching an attacker. Martial arts can help us to stay safe in countless scenarios.

Let me share the statement I started with because I suspect you’ll completely agree with me:

As a martial arts instructor, I want my students to use what they learn in class every day
